Sudden Impact: Extension’s Response to Natural Disasters
Monday, August 19, 2019 at 1:30-4:30 pm CT
Cost: $40
On August 19, join Scott Cotton, University of Wyoming Extension Area Educator for Agriculture, Rural Living and Disaster Readiness, for a pre-conference addressing how Extension’s involvement in the community can make a difference to prevent and assist during natural disasters. Cotton, who served as the national chairman of the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN), is an expert in disaster preparation and recovery. During this pre-conference, learn how community development, youth development, and consumer education professionals can be engaged with communities to make a difference. Also participate in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute Training Exercise and receive a (FEMA) certificate upon completion. To attend, participants must register in advance. (EDEN) is a consortium of 350 disaster related experts from across the U.S. who collaborate with the USDA, FEMA, and other partners to develop and deliver disaster resilience educational programs. To learn more about the organization, visit https://eden.lsu.edu/educate/
EDEN Overview Video: WATCH HERE
Extension serves a crucial role in communities on a daily basis. When communities face crisis Extension’s role is dramatically different and yet the same. Join us for the Sudden Impact pre-conference training to learn how colleagues have stepped up for the last 28 years, some Extension factors that make us a good emergency fit for communities under duress, and a practical discussion on handling cows in trees, pigs on barns, towns without power and islands without hope.
KEYNOTE PANEL DISCUSSION
Unmasking our Potential – New Leadership!
Cooperative Extension in the Future from the Perspectives of USDA/NIFA and APLU
While masks are expected and useful during Mardi Gras parades, and maybe at other times, we are unmasking our worthy partners – NIFA and APLU! Dr. Angle and Dr. Steele are new in their current roles as Director of NIFA and Vice President of APLU, respectively, and both have notably strong and productive foundations in Land-Grant universities. This is a perfect opportunity to remove all masks and blinders and see the future we can expect from their new and vibrant leadership.
