Dennis Dimick
Extension’s Inspiring Foundation and Challenge
Dennis Dimick has focused his journalism career on the collision between human aspiration and the planet. In 35 years at National Geographic he served for more than a decade as the magazine’s environment editor, guiding creation of major projects on climate change, energy, freshwater, population, and food security. From 2008-2012 he co-organized the Aspen Environment Forum with the Aspen Institute. He has many received awards from the Society of Environmental Journalists and Pictures of the Year International, and the 2013 National Press Photographers Association Sprague Award for service to photojournalism. A 20-year faculty member of the University of Missouri Photo Workshop, Dimick has received several lectureships: the 2010 Gov. Tom McCall Memorial Lecture at Oregon State University, the 2017 Seaman A. Knapp Lecture honoring the founder of the Cooperative Extension concept, and the 2018 Ruhl Lecture at the University of Oregon. Dimick is co-founder of Eyes on Earth, a project to inspire a new generation of environmental photographers. Dimick grew up on a sheep and hay farm in Oregon, and he holds degrees in agriculture and agricultural journalism from Oregon State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Extension’s Inspiring Foundation and Challenge
Dennis Dimick will recount how Extension Service and land-grant university education provided a vital knowledge foundation that propelled him though an innovative 40-year career communicating agricultural, natural resource, and global sustainability issues. He will discuss the challenge of helping an urban public value the ample and fragile food supply we take for granted, and the work we face in growing enough nutritious food for a hungry world.
