SOUTHERN REGION FCS PROGRAM LEADER TELECONFERENCE MINUTES

Teleconference of Southern Region FCS-PL’s started shortly after 9:00 am on October 20, 2000.  Those connecting were Sarah Anderson, Arkansas; Nayda Torres, Florida; Lynn Russell, Arkansas; and Kathy Volanty, Texas.

Teleconferences were confirmed for the coming year on 3rd Fridays at 9:00 am, Central Standard Time.  January 19, April 20, July 20 and October 19, 2001.

The following agenda items were discussed:

Agenda Item: Previous minutes reflected that the Secretary for FCS-PL’s be appointed to assist with website development.  Follow up with Bonnie Teater.

Discussion: Some discussion about what was meant by web-sight development.  It was concluded that this meant keeping Bonnie informed of the minutes of the meetings and scheduled meetings so that they could be posted on the SRDC website.

Action:  Kathy Volanty to follow up with Bonnie Teater.

Agenda Item: Committee reports to be sent to Bonnie by September 30.  Martha Johnson’s report  on Family and Community Health has been received.  Any items needing PLC approval need to be emailed to Bonnie by October 30.  Sarah Anderson will get the Aging Baby Boomer proposal to Bonnie.

Discussion: Bonnie has received the Family and Community Health report from Martha Johnson.  The Aging Baby Boomer was submitted to PLC and they approved it to go forth as a SERA work group.  The Health was to be submitted to PLC.  They are currently reviewing it.  Nothing had been submitted on Working Poor/Welfare to Work.  Arkansas will be having training on the new welfare to work curriculum sometime in 2001.  Three states will meet in December to finalize the curriculum and set a date for training.  Sarah Anderson will let everyone know about the training  when it is ready.   No plans to submit the welfare to work proposal to the PLC at this time - possibly at the spring PLC meeting.

Martha Johnson told Sarah Anderson that the Family and Community Health proposal included an accountability workshop and that it would focus on providing a follow-up to the four accountability groups- parenting, health, resource management and  nutrition.  Leaders and specialists would all be coming back together to further develop evaluation instruments/tools/questions.  The nutrition and parenting groups would need to form specialist committees for planning.  This workshop would be proposed for March, or at least sometime in the spring for the southern region.

Southern region may want to consider opening it up to other regions, especially those that have not looked at accountability indicators.  Some concern expressed that time was passing quickly and we might not be able to keep up with Howard Ladewig’s timetable.  Hopefully the time and effort  that has been spent gathering the accountability indicators from the past meetings would not be wasted.

Action: None - wait to hear about welfare to work training, and other accountability progress from Dr. Ladewig.

Agenda Item:   Dr. Linda Willis will be recruiting an 1890 representative to serve on the Nutrition Accountability group.

Discussion: It was mentioned in the minutes that the nutrition and parenting group need to form specialist committees for planning.  However, if they are to be ready for the proposed March meeting (Martha Johnson’s proposal), then things will have to move pretty fast. Different state leaders were assigned to different groups - Carolyn Carter to resource management, Gina Eubanks and Sarah Anderson to parenting, John Dooley and an 1890 to nutrition, Martha Johnson and Carolyn Nobles to health.

Action:   Kathy Volanty will check with Carolyn about the nutrition group leader representative..

Agenda Item: On the October 13 conference call, the PLC agreed to go to Savannah, Georgia for the 2001 meeting.  A planning group is to meet on November 20-21.  Any suggestions for speakers should be given to Sarah Anderson.

Discussion: Don’t know at this time is there a special theme or emphasis.  PLC would welcome ideas for speakers from FCS.  Ideas for speakers might be generated from the new Plan of Work or EASE might be topics. Possibly Peggy Mazaros talking about the Future of Extension.  Especially talking about youth.

Action: Suggest Peggy Mazaros for speaker.  Other suggestions to go to Sarah Anderson or Carolyn Nobles.

Items of Note:

Gladys Vaughan’s husband passed away this weekend.  He had been in the hospital. Funeral service in Washington, buried in Florida.

We wished Nayda well in her new role as administrative FCS liaison to Alma Hobbs.
