UPDATES
Health and Family Resource Management Accountability Workshop
Johnson provided an overview of the Health and Family Resource Management Accountability Workshop, indicating that the workshop had received a good response. She also reported that the Health SERA group would meet on April 12-14, immediately following the accountability workshop, to plan the regional health institute which will be October 2-6, 2000.
Southern Region Program Leaders Conference
Teresa Nieves de Garcia extended a welcome to the group to the Southern Region Program Leaders Conference that will be in San Juan, Puerto Rico, August 27-30, 2000. The headquarters hotel will be the Ritz Carlton. Torres will explore the possibility of planning a preconference on diversity for Family and Consumer Sciences Program Leaders.
Multi-state Initiatives
Dooley indicated that a follow-up on the Nutrition and Parenting Education Accountability Workshop held in 1999, as well as on the Health and Family Resource Management Accountability Workshop in 2000, should be made. He suggested that a structure on how we are going to proceed with outcomes of the workshops should be developed during the Family and Consumers Sciences committee meeting at the Program Leaders Conference in August.
Community Sustainability Conference
The Community Sustainability Conference will be October 8-10, 2000, in
Nashville, Tennessee. Dooley, a member of the planning committee for the
conference, said the purpose of the conference is to show community issues
in broad context with disciplines across the Extension Service. Information
concerning the conference will be sent to states by Bonnie Teater, Southern
Rural Development Center.
PLC PLANNING SESSION
The group discussed agenda plans for the meeting of Family and Consumer Sciences Program Leaders at Program Leaders Conference in August. It was decided that the allocated time should be spent as a work session to address multi-state programming efforts and to develop a plan for implementation.
The group decided to invite Dr. Alma Hobbs, CSREES, to address the group concerning multi-state programming from a federal perspective. Specifically, she will be asked to:
- provide an update of multi-state programming efforts that currently exist across the nation,
- share her perspective of what indicators constitute a successful multi-state program,
- guide the group in structuring multi-state plans,
- describe the role of national program leaders in multi-state programming efforts, and
- provide examples of quality Family and Consumer Sciences multi- state programs from other regions.
Carter should send an official letter of invitation to Dr. Hobbs for the meeting.
Work groups in specific areas will be formed to develop multi-state programming plans during the work session. Work group topics will be determined in the following manner:
- In early June, program leaders will be invited to submit current programs that could be enhanced through multi-state collaborations. They will also be asked to list emerging programs/issues that could be addressed through multi-state agreements.
- In follow-up correspondence, program leaders will prioritize the items submitted.
- During a meeting of program leaders during the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Annual Meeting in Chicago in June, program leaders will determine work groups (based on input) and select facilitators for each group. Facilitators will lead discussion and planning of work groups during the work session in August.
Work groups will be asked to examine current programs and determine the feasibility of multi-state programs within the context of current issues. Work groups will explore:
- collaborative curricula,
- staffing needs,
- funding sources,
- strategic planning, and
- common interests among 1890 and 1862 institutions. (A survey will be conducted prior to the PLC work session to gather information concerning this item.)
Program leaders will also discuss plans for regional meetings for Family and Consumer Sciences specialists. The meetings would occur prior to the accountability workshops held each year. The plan for these regional meetings must be submitted as a recommendation to Directors, and receive approval. Therefore, program leaders will meet during the AAFCS annual meeting to begin development of the proposal for Directors. The proposal will be completed during the July conference call.
