Connecting Our Communities: Our Next 100 Years: Why, What and How
The Land-Grant University System celebrates the centennial of the Smith-Lever Act in 2014. As we embrace the past 100 years of Extension work, we look forward to what the next century will bring. What will be the focus of the work moving forward? How will we reach audiences, attract new communities and continue to be viable in the future? And perhaps most importantly, why is the Cooperative Extension System the right mechanism to extend knowledge and change lives in the next 100 years? Join us to explore these important guiding questions.
Keynote Presentation and Dialogue
Andy Goodman, “Change the Story, Change the World”Since we first began talking to each other, telling stories has been a powerful way to capture attention, engage an audience, and motivate them to act. As we learn more about how our brains work, we’re also discovering that stories are intrinsic to decision-making and help shape our view of the world. Change the Story, Change the World is a highly interactive workshop in which participants learn about the importance of narrative as a form of communication, learn how to tell effective stories, and learn how to use stories in virtually all aspects of their day-to-day work.
The workshop includes:
- Why Is Narrative So Powerful? An introductory segment presenting research on the role of storytelling in human evolution, how stories help us remember, and how stories determine what we choose to believe and what we choose to ignore.
- How Do You Tell a Good Story? An interactive exercise during which participants tell personal stories to prove to themselves that they already know the basic elements of good storytelling. This segment also includes an analysis of the differences between journalistic storytelling (which is intended to inform quickly and concisely) and narrative storytelling (which is intended to engage and motivate).
- What Kinds of Stories Should You Tell? This segment, which will be completely tailored to the specific storytelling needs of the land grant universities in the audience, identifies the kinds of stories they should tell, and allows them to outline and share these stories with their colleagues.
- How Do You Create a Storytelling Culture? The workshop concludes with recommended next steps that will help participants gather new stories and incorporate storytelling into all aspects of their day-to-day work.
