Tuesday, August 30 - Historic Charleston Tour

9:00 a.m. A mini coach will depart the Francis Marion for a delightful, private introduction to Charleston. Led by a registered guide, you will tour the city's historic district in air-conditioned comfort. The city's rich history, beautiful gardens and striking architecture will be seen and discussed.

Included in the tour will be entrance to the Nathaniel Russell House, one of Charleston's finest house museums. http://www.historiccharleston.org/russell.html. This superior example of Adams-style architecture was built shortly before 1809 by Nathaniel Russell, son of a chief justice of Rhode Island. The home's astonishing "flying staircase" spirals unsupported from floor to floor and the tier of beautiful south rooms have elliptical plans, complemented by gleaming old silver, fine china, flowers, and some of the finest examples of period furniture.

12:00 a.m. Your guide will finish the tour as you arrive back at the Francis Marion.

Wednesday, August 31 - Magnolia Plantation and Gardens Tour

9:00 a.m. Your morning will begin with a mini bus ride through the Ashley River Historic District. While passing through the district on the way to Magnolia Gardens, a private tour guide will provide an overview of plantation life during Charleston's history.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Magnolia Gardens has, for over three centuries, been the original ancestral home of the Drayton family. Besides being the oldest major public gardens in the country, it is also America's oldest man-made attraction, having been open to the public annually since the late 1860's. For over a century, Magnolia Gardens has been considered by many experts to be "the most beautiful garden in the world." Today, its reputation is enhanced by the fact that, from a purely Springtime garden, it is now planted to offer the maximum color possible in every season. Your guide will provide a guided tour through the gardens and plantation house or you may grab a map and set out on your own.

In addition to the historic gardens, the overall plantation area, and the stately plantation house, Magnolia Gardens offers a 125-acre rice field waterfowl refuge, a street of antebellum cabins, a Biblical garden which was pictured in Time Magazine, a petting zoo with plantation animals, a large Indian burial mound, a restored pre-Revolutionary rice barge, and a horticultural maze for the young and young-at-heart.

12:30 a.m. Arrive back at the Francis Marion.
