"Housekeeping items":
- Because the committee's membership has changed, it is important to forward to Ellen any email address changes and CIT group membership changes. Ellen will update the committee list on the Southern Region web site to reflect these changes.
- Because this project demonstrates multi-state and regional cooperation, Don Poucher and Barry Jones are nominating RadioSource.net as an exhibit at the annual NASULGC Capitol Hill exhibition in March.
- Gloria provided info about 11/09/01 PLC conference call. Tim Mack will be CIT's 1862 advisor. An 1890's advisor has not yet been appointed. Two action items were taken to the PLC group from CIT. These two items called for each state to obtain computer videoconference capability in the administrative office and for states to develop common wording on copyright statements. Both items were approved by the PLC. Ron Brown voiced questions about the videoconferencing item which will be addressed in discussions at Nashville. Feedback forms submitted at the annual conference are under review. Recommendations for change in the structure of the conference are being solicited. A suggestion by CIT group members included a wrap-up session on Wednesday that would allow for committees to report back to the at-large group. Another suggestion would be to replace the at-large session on Tuesday morning with opportunity for interaction between committees.
Reports by subcommittees:
- Photo Image Database - report by Don Hamilton
Initially the primary efforts centered around cataloging photographs, but the project was expanded to include other media. A rename of the project has been "Media Asset Database." A survey has been distributed to an external group to solicit feedback about this "Media Asset Database". Due date for final comments is 11/30/01. The document outlines four scenarios: (1) adapting an existing system; (2) build a new system based upon the individual institutional needs; (3) purchase commercial system; and (4) develop regional standard protocols. Each institution seems to be at a different phase in their efforts to develop "asset databases". The subcommittee intended to pass along the document to Kevin and Gloria as an informational item for the PLC's meeting in December. Discussion centered on the need for additional input before a strategy, direction, or suggestion is forwarded on to the PLC. A "Call for Response" will be sent to CIT members by this subcommittee. An update will be sent the item on to KGH and Gloria for discussion with the PLC as an informational itemSharing Photos- report by Ellen Ritter
Ellen reported that the Communications members of CIT decided, at the annual conference, to share photography with other institutions. Ellen has previously forwarded a URL (of the photography database website) to interested members; Florida and Mississippi will be distributing cd-roms in the very near future.
- Photo Image Database - report by Don Hamilton
- Competency-based Training - report by Larry Lippke
Group met in Athens, GA to discuss the process to develop competency-based modules for the ANR program area that could be shared across state lines. ANR leaders would be surveyed to find what types of modules should be developed. Content providers (those who had developed the subject matter with publications or other resources) would be surveyed to find if there were resources to convert this content into competency-based modules. A peer-review process would be engaged for these modules. The intent was to distribute surveys this year. However, as a result of a presentation made at the Director's meeting in Roanoke, a "Curriculum Project Task Force" has been created, along with four working groups, to support the efforts in multi-state raining and educational material development and sharing. These four working groups include: inventory and pilot test, curriculum taxonomy, learning standards, and information technology standards. The Directors have submitted to Ron Brown the names of individuals who would serve on this task force and the associated working groups. A conference convening these groups will be held in January 22-23, 2002. A memo has been distributed to group members (of this task force and working groups) with a draft survey. Because the Directors have expanded CIT's initial project from ANR to other program areas, it is unknown how this affects the initial efforts between CIT and ANR. CIT members on this task force will provide information back to the CIT committee members after the January meeting so we can decide about the future of this project as part of CIT. - Standard Wording for sharable documents - report by Kevin Hayes
Sample copyright notices have been previously distributed to CIT members. Oklahoma plans to use the model from Mississippi when sharing items between institutions. These notices can be added to printed and web-based resources. These notices read"Users are free to view, copy, print, and/or distribute the contents of the web-based instructional program for non-commercial, educational purposes at no charge. Users are not permitted to alter the contents and must cite the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and the authors as the source."
"Contents may not be altered, but may be reproduced for non-commercial, educational purposes without special permission. Users must identify the original author(s) and cite the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service as the source."
- Copyright Issues - report from Tom Knecht
The copyright policy and procedure document developed by the Mississippi State Extension Service and shared recently with the CIT group protects the Extension Service as a publisher from possible claims of copyright violation by those faculty authors who prepare the materials for publications. Also, this notice provides information to authors who desire to use resources and how permission can be granted or when a citation is needed. - Cooperative IT Workshops - report by Nina Boston
Rather than contract the work from other vendors or sources, cooperative workshops, seminars, and in-service training sessions would be led by staff at cooperating institutions. Participants would include CIT members or staff at other institutions. The first proposed workshop will address web-accessibility issues. Issues addressed during Arkansas's web site update will provide material for this workshop. The workshop will be delivered by either video conferencing, as PPT slides from the web, or as video streaming. An email will be distributed to the CIT members in an effort to solicit the video conferencing capabilities of those who plan to attend. It is hopeful that the workshop will be delivered via video conferencing.
Other issues:
- Gloria relayed that a task force has been setup to review the SRPLC structure. It appears this task force will be meeting in January.
- Discussion about e-Extension and the involvement in this discussion from CIT members. Members are encouraged to talk with local liaisons on this task force about the e-Extension project.
- Next conference call is tentatively scheduled for Jan 28/29. Planned topics include: competency-based modules, "media asset database", cooperative workshop update, e-Extension task force, overview of PLC meeting (to be held in December), and preliminary planning for August meeting.
